5 Tips for Songwriters Starting a Band by Shane Cooley

‘Don’t ever start a band,’ was the first piece of advice given to me by 20 an early songwriting mentor. He was an older musician who had been in several outfits throughout his career; most of them based around his original songs. As a starry-eyed young songwriter dreaming of starting my own ensemble, those words took me aback. My musical obsessions at the time were Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, singer-songwriters who surrounded their songs with musicians who believed in them. I found out later from learning more about their stories (as well as living my own) that creating a sustainable team of any kind comes with a vast amount of complications and responsibilities.

Happy Holidays!  On Friday, December 8 I am releasing "Elf Rights/Snow Globe" - a holiday-themed double single! It's been a tradition of mine to make audible holiday cards since I was a teen. It always puts me in the holiday spirit, and I hope they'll do the same for you! The tracks were recorded with love at Cooleyland Recording here in Virginia and mastered at Kevorkian Mastering in Brooklyn, NYC. "Elf Rights" is a comedic anthem for Santa's helpers that I began crafting when I was 16 (20 years ago..wooooah). "Snow Globe" is a brand new tune written from a place of gratefulness, wishing for peace on Earth. I love the challenge of making holiday music..finding the different sounds, textures and flavors that go into the musical cookie batter :) My local radio station, WRAR 105.5FM in Tappahannock will be debuting one of the songs on air Friday morning (12/8) at 7:30am!

Shane was interviewed by Quality Americana Magazine about how Jimmy Buffett influenced his music.

"Virginia songwriter Shane Cooley talked about Buffett’s influence in his music on his weekly live stream, and shared a beautiful cover of “A Pirate Looks at Forty” with vocalist for the Midnight Girls Lori Ellen.

“Jimmy was a huge influence upon me as a songwriter, as a storyteller, and just has been a presence in my life since a very young age,” Cooley said. “I wouldn’t be writing songs if not for him.”

Tornado Alley video is out now on YouTube, with incredible animation by Studio Cirasa. It has been an absolute pleasure being included in this project by Ushuaia & The Wanderlust Orchestra, featuring Sebastiano Lillo!

This journey began for me during the pandemic, when Ushuaia reached out to me with heartfelt compositions and backstories of a Wild West adventure, which I remotely distilled into lyrics/vocals. Now, freshly back from a Wild West adventure of my own, it is lovely to witness inspiration move into fruition. If you haven’t heard Ushuaia & the Wanderlust Orchestra’s 19-song album, “End of the World,” featuring two of my co-writes, I highly recommend it! It is a richly diverse musical odyssey, that I am honored to be a part of.

A huge thanks to Paul Shugrue / Out of the Box for having me, the Sandler Center sound and staff for being 100% on the ball, and to everyone who attended and brought such good energy to the night.

I am beyond thrilled that my audition tape for "Spawn of Svengoolie" was aired on Svengoolie via MeTV national television last week!  My parents and I are huge fans, so I'm nerding out a bit :)  The audition tape features a "Sven-dition" of my song "Dracula," and was followed by the audition tape of original Lost in Space "Will Robinson" actor Bill Mumy!!  Pretty darn neat..thanks Sven!

Shane Cooley's Summertime Single "Stella Ray"
Shane Cooley pivots toward jovial summertime leanings and stares at the sun on "Stella Ray": a pure fun, off-kilter, folk-pop miniature. Like a kid with ABC building blocks, the Virginia/Austin-based artist toys and tinkers with a mixed bag of instruments from buoyant mandolin to pan-puttered percussion and seesaw synths. Cooley's smooth register - childlike and dreamy - strolls unrushed. Diverting from the melancholic and rural pastoral folk on Kings Highway (2015), the Beach Boys-inspired track aligns itself more with the experimental Americana backdrop on April's Forest.

Singer-songwriter Shane Cooley recently unveiled his new double single Voices/Black Moon. Released to coincide with an annular solar eclipse visible across the Americas, the songs originally featured on Cooley’s 2020 acoustic anthology 50 Songs. These new versions were recorded at his home studio in Virginia with Cooley producing and performing all of the instruments. While retaining their homespun charm, the additional layers of instrumentation subtly elevate a pair of songs on which their creator looks inwards to address times of challenge, change and growth.

Cooley self-produced 'Forest' in his river cottage in remote Mollusk, Virginia, and played all of the instruments. Most of the songs were conceived during moonlit walks in the woods, a place where Cooley has always felt at home. Sprinkled throughout Forest are nature sounds captured during the recording process. The album was mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering in Brooklyn, NY.​

Join us this Saturday at Radio Coffee in Austin, TX as we celebrate Earth Day, and the anniversary of my album “Forest” 🌳  We’ll be performing full-band versions of songs from the album, as well as the new EP - “The Circus Rolls On” and more! 12" vinyl of "Forest" will be available at the show, or online at on Bandcamp .

The meanings and memories of this album’s creation are as deep within me as the roots of the Virginia woods.  Nature’s healing energy intermingled with the wounds that created this musical chapter. 

Sitting here in South Austin, I’m reminded of my myriad of former lives- a country mouse chasing rock n roll in an ever-growing city, a soul in flux wandering aimlessly through wooded trails in pandemic-era Ohio, catching the songs that would save me..a divorcée returning home to Virginia, re-inventing my craft  by producing these songs in solitude. That experience in itself felt supernatural. The sounds and spirits of the forest surrounding me became instruments themselves. 

​

Earth Day calls for us to have a moment with the planet we dwell upon. “Forest” is my middle name, and everything I aspire to be. There is a balance in nature that we as humans don’t fully understand. This album helped me find a balance within. I’m forever grateful for its existence, and the appreciation it has received from others. It feels good to still be here, fighting harder than ever for the sake of the song 💚

In 2020, a friend of a friend from Italy contacted me about being involved in a remote collaborative project for Ushuaia & the Wanderlust Orchestra. Lorenzo conjured up this idea after a series of musical compositions inspired by his travels. Given the compositions and the backstory behind them, I was asked to contribute some lyrics and vocals on two of the tracks. I tracked my vocals at Reel Love Recording Company in Dayton, Ohio..pretty much my only venture out into the world during the lockdown. I still remember being fascinated by the nature of this project..working with an artist I had never met face to face, during such a strange time for the world.  Many musical and personal journeys later, I am thrilled to announce that Ushuaia & the Wanderlust Orchestra’s full 19-song album, “End of the World,” is out now everywhere! The project features incredible musicians and songwriters from around the world, including my appearances on the tracks “Ascent to Elkhorn,” and “Tornado Alley.” I cordially invite you to dig into this diverse musical journey on all music platforms, including Youtube Music .

SHANE COOLEY Releases WINTER’S WALK Holiday EP

Bundle up, because singer/ songwriter Shane Cooley’s new EP, Winter’s Walk, will take you on a
journey through a snowy night in Holiday Nostalgia Land. “I’ve been studying what makes a holiday song tick since I was very young,” said Cooley, “I used to write and record Christmas songs on my 8-track when I was in high school, and give them out as Christmas cards. This
project brings back some good memories.”
